Festival of Sport and Culture in Skipton

The OlympicTorch Relay will be passing through Skipton on 24 June and to celebrate this momentous occasion there will be a Festival of Sport and Culture on the High Street between 10am and 3pm, ahead of the torch coming through the town. There will be a great range of activities and performances held by local clubs and schools with something for all ages. Don’t miss the chance to get involved in this historic event and to enjoy the carnival atmosphere!

It’s not every year that the Olympics are held on our “home ground” and this is just one of the numerous attractions held in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales during the summer months.Why not book a holiday in or around the Skipton area to ensure you don’t miss out? Join Our Street Party!

On Sunday 3rd June we will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a special street party on the Skipton High Street which will be closed off for the day.Special seating areas will be created on the High Street so you and your family can set up your own mini-street party – or you can book a place in our special ‘royal enclosures’ where tables and chairs will be provided.

A giant TV screen will be showing coverage of the Royal Regatta which takes place on the Thames and also archive footage celebrating the Queen’s 60 years reign.

There will be live music from different bands, a variety of stalls including food stalls and a licensed bar and for the children a funfair and lots of activities. Two feature films will also be on show during the day: 12pm – The Lion King and 8.00pm Mamma Mia.

To complete your day you can have your photograph taken on our Royal Throne or with one of the Queen’s Guards.

Every year in April the border town of Melrose becomes the focus of international attention. The occasion is the Melrose Sevens a rugby event devised and first played in the town in 1877. The Sevens is one of the biggest events held in the Borders and attracts followers from all over the world. But this small town has plenty of other claims to fame and is well used to welcoming visitors from all over the world.

Close by is one of the biggest Roman presences in Scotland, the supply camp of Trimontium, and wherever you go in Melrose the Abbey is never far away. The abbey was founded in 1136 by the Cistercian monks from Rievaulx in Yorkshire. St Cuthbert was part of the abbey community before he moved on to the island of Lindisfarne.

Melrose is the starting point of the popular 64-mile St Cuthbert’s Walk which criss-crosses the borders on its way to Holy Island. It is also the resting place of Robert the Bruce’s heart after it had been taken for use as a talisman by Scots fighting to remove the Moors from Spain.

For cyclists a 57 mile route forms the Border Abbeys Cycle Route, although there are some picturesque routes of a shorter distance. A must is to cycle over Scott’s view to Smailholm Tower and Mellerstain House and for walkers the stretch of the Borders Abbeys Way from Melrose to Dryburgh Abbey passes by the picturesque Eildon Hills and offers easy access to stunning scenery.
